Course Requirements

Applicants must attend the following NHNLA courses:

  • Methods in Effective Rental Counseling
  • Fair Housing Webinar
  • One of the following courses:
    • NHNLA Fundamentals of Pre-Purchase Homebuyer Counseling
    • eLearning Prepurchase I or II
    • NeighborWorks HO 103

Exam Requirements:

Applicants must pass the following exams with a score of 80% or higher:

  • Methods in Effective Rental Counseling
  • Fundamentals of Pre-Purchase Homebuyer Counseling or eLearning Prepurchase I or II

Practical Experience Requirements

Applicants must have a minimum of three years housing counseling experience.

Submission Requirements

In order to submit the Rental Counselor Certification Application, applicants will need the following documents:

  • A letter signed by both the applicant and their manager or executive director certifying that the practical experience requirements have been met. An example letter can be found here.
  • The National Industry Code of Ethics and Conduct for Homeownership Professionals form, signed by the applicant
  • Methods in Effective Rental Counseling certificate of course completion
  • Fair Housing webinar certificate of completion
  • One of the following certificates of completion:
    • NHNLA Fundamentals of Pre-Purchase Homebuyer Counseling 
    • eLearning Prepurchase I or II
    • NeighborWorks HO 103

Once the application is complete, click “submit” at the end of the screen. Your application will be reviewed, and notification regarding your certification status will be sent soon thereafter.
